Job Summary
We are looking for individuals to join our client’s team as Clinical laboratory Technologist – Blood Bank. You will be working under the direction of a Supervisor, Manager, or Director, with extensive latitude for independent judgment and decision making, supervises, trains, assigns work to and evaluates work performance of personnel in a laboratory subunit performing routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses in the Blood Bank. Maintains all necessary records pertaining to Immunohematology testing. Responsible for validating and verifying all testing following quality control/CQI standards.
Job Description
- Oversees the maintenance and ordering of laboratory supplies as well as preparation, packaging, and labeling of laboratory supplies needs in the Blood Bank ensuring that inventory is adequate for testing in the laboratory.
- Can be assigned to train other lab technologists in Blood Bank laboratory techniques, and trains subordinates (lab technicians) in new procedures and skills as needed.
- Assists Techs in complex technical problems or unusual developments in their assignments.
- Ensures that laboratory policy and procedures are followed during testing in compliance with all regulatory agencies including NYS, CAP, and TJC.
- Under the supervision of the clinical Director, site manager or supervisors conducts laboratory testing in the Blood bank timely, accurately, and efficiently.
- Perform appropriate RBC antigen typing using known antisera as per established procedures; groups or types of blood and verifies blood by back typing test serum of blood donors and recipients using known A, B, O red blood cells, performs crossmatching for compatibility. Supervise and/or performs and interpret results of antibody detection and identification tests. Identifies antibodies that could cause adverse reactions. Supervise and perform routine immunohematology tests as warranted (DAT, elution) as required. Prepare aliquot blood for pediatric use.
- The technologist can lead, train and assign work or perform the following tasks: receiving, accessioning, labeling, processing, issuing blood and blood products, tasks entering requisite information into the Blood bank computerized (Wellsky/Immulink) in accordance with established procedures.
- Monitors performance and maintains all systems including appropriate record keeping required by regulatory performance specifications of the analytical equipment in use. Must respond to shutdown/failure of the LIS by being able to expedite specimen flow to ensure continuous service.
- Perform tests related to transfusion reaction, record reports, and report to the supervisors.
- Review and correct all specimen processing issues/errors, using appropriate documentation/corrective action measures. Must be able to follow quality procedures for the implementation of new systems and analyzers.

- Maintains quality functions for the laboratory reviewing all Quality control, monitoring the efficacy of the indicators, and analyzing quality data.
- Is responsible for and maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies assigned and ensures that the laboratory is adequately equipped to handle the processing of all specimens received and that Blood inventory control as mandated by NYS and other regulatory agencies for Blood banks is compliant.
- May assist in personnel management and staffing functions; assist in scheduling staff or continuous coverage, can train and assign staff to respective workstations, as assigned.
- Technologists can be assigned to work any tour as required, including every other weekend.
Skills Required
- 1 year Blood Bank Clinical Laboratory Technologist experience.
Education/Training/Certifications.
- Valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by NYSED, Primary Source Verification required.
- BLS preferred.

- Malpractice Insurance - All clinical workers are required to have active individual Medical Malpractice. A copy must be provided prior to start of assignment. All clinical workers licensed by the state of NY are required to provide.
