Thunder Bay Highway Maintenance has immediate openings for Snow Plow Operators. The winter maintenance season runs yearly from September until April, weather dependent. The Snow Plow Operator will work together with the Patrollers to maintain the areas within their jurisdiction.  This includes sanding, salting, DLA treatment, plowing and general labour duties.  Operators are responsible for maintaining accurate documentation including fuel reports and safety reports.



  • Safe and efficient operation of spreader, plow wing, combo unit or tow plow to perform the clearing of local roads as per the contract requirements
  • Maintaining accurate documentation including but not limited to, fuel reports, safety reports and Hours of Service
  • Maintain/clean equipment and conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs as required
  • Operate specialized equipment, including winter equipment, as trained and able, and as required
  • Familiarize and execute the performance requirements of the contract; understand route map and sand/salt application rate
  • Carry out highway maintenance activities, facility maintenance and yard maintenance as required



  • DZ license with a clean driver’s abstract and ability to drive manual transmission
  • Previous experience in winter works operations, considered an asset
  • Ability to operate winter combination units
  • Available to respond to call-ins within thirty minutes
  • Ability to remain flexible with shift schedules, and extended hours (evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays)
  • Mechanical knowledge, ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment
  • Good understanding of MTO standards and AMC Contract Performance Requirements, considered an asset
  • Effective communication (written and verbal)
  • Willingness to work and drive in extreme weather conditions
