Critical Systems Technician IV, Switchgear

Salary $110K to $164K

The Critical Systems Technician IV in Ashburn, VA is responsible for a range of tasks including start-up, commissioning, repairs, preventive maintenance, ongoing troubleshooting, and servicing state-of-the-art mission critical electrical equipment. This role serves as the primary on-site contact and provides daily leadership, reporting directly to the regional manager and working alongside other Critical Systems Technicians. In addition to project management duties, the technician may also participate in pre-sales support as the market expands.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Pre-Sales Support

  • Review technical specifications with the sales team and project managers to determine the scope of field operations as outlined in bid packages.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to ensure all specifications are properly met.
  • Review submittal packages as part of the project preparation process.

Factory Support

  • Review equipment specifications to confirm systems meet facility requirements.
  • Attend factory witness testing when necessary.
  • Communicate with Factory Project Managers to ensure that any punch list items identified during witness testing are resolved before shipment.
  • Oversee completion of factory punch list items that are designated as field repairable upon equipment arrival on-site.
  • Coordinate with engineering, quality, and product support teams as needed.

Installation

  • Lead formal and comprehensive discussions about the elements and scope of work, including the change order policy and process.
  • Ensure regular scheduled meetings involving the field project manager, sales, and the customer are conducted.
  • Advise Field Service Management on project staffing requirements.
  • Serve as the primary site contact, interfacing with contractors, vendors, and customers.
  • Provide job-specific technical support.
  • Work with Field Management and Scheduling to ensure staffing and scheduling align with job requirements.
  • Coordinate all site testing, third-party labor, and test equipment as necessary.
  • Liaise with the factory to resolve any on-site technical issues.

Project Management

  • Determine labor and manpower requirements based on work specifications.
  • Develop and monitor the overall project schedule, identifying any potential impacts.
  • Report potential impacts to project margins.
  • Track and report work requested outside of the original scope, ensuring change orders are created.
  • Provide regular status updates to the Project Manager and Director of Service Operations.

Final Turnover

  • Offer direct feedback to the Project Manager to resolve any issues.
  • Submit all required site documentation as specified in the project requirements.
  • Secure the customer’s final acceptance upon job completion in accordance with project specifications.

Other Functions

  • Coordinate specialized commissioning and testing of systems.
  • Conduct specific training sessions for customers and field engineers to familiarize them with equipment and processes.
  • Provide technical support and management direction to regional staff.
  • Perform site visits during regional travel as directed by management.
  • Respond to service calls as needed.
  • Travel approximately 30% of the time, with potential for increased travel depending on workload.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services (PM) on contracted gear and other components.
  • Facilitate communication between field and factory teams, sharing lessons learned from projects.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Field Service Manager and Regional Service Director.
  • Travel to other locations as the regional market expands.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electronics, electrical theory, or a related discipline is highly desirable. Equivalent work experience or military training is accepted.
  • A minimum of 7 years of field repair or customer service experience with UPS, electrical, electro-mechanical, or electronics-related equipment, or equivalent military equipment experience is required.
  • Three to five years of experience with mission-critical products is required, along with knowledge of Critical Power Systems.
  • Experience working with critical power equipment such as UPS, switchgear, PLCs, batteries, monitoring equipment, and generators.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings.

Organizational Skills

  • Capability to train, influence, and motivate team members.
  • Experience writing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Methods of Procedure (MOPS), technical reports, and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer relations skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Valid state vehicle operator's license required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in technical writing, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Project.
  • Strong technical and troubleshooting skills.

Certificates and Licenses

  • NETA/NICET Level 2 or 3 certification is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The technician must be able to supervise multiple employees and exercise supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements of this job include occasionally moving objects weighing 10-50 pounds, frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and occasional sitting, climbing, or balancing. The position also requires specific visual abilities such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
