MEP Technical Coordinator – Mechanical & Control Systems
Overview:
The MEP Technical Coordinator – Mechanical & Control Systems is responsible for overseeing the installation, integration, commissioning, and operational readiness of mission-critical mechanical and control systems within data center and critical infrastructure environments. This role serves as the primary technical resource for HVAC, controls, and mechanical system troubleshooting while supporting electrical infrastructure integration as needed. Acting as a key on-site representative, the coordinator combines technical expertise with project coordination responsibilities to ensure systems are properly installed, commissioned, integrated with owner control platforms, and operating according to project requirements. The position requires strong troubleshooting skills, engineering knowledge, and the ability to develop innovative solutions in complex environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead integration of HVAC, controls, and mechanical systems with customer monitoring and control platforms
- Troubleshoot communication failures between equipment, controls systems, and owner platforms
- Diagnose and resolve software, programming, controls, wiring, and equipment-related issues
- Support startup, testing, and commissioning of chillers, HVAC systems, and controls infrastructure
- Retrofit, upgrade, and replace obsolete control systems with modern platforms and technologies
- Configure and integrate communication cards, protocols, and monitoring systems
- Coordinate commissioning activities with commissioning agents, contractors, and project stakeholders
- Ensure mechanical and controls systems are prepared for successful startup, testing, and turnover
- Verify installations meet project specifications, engineering standards, and quality requirements
- Support electrical infrastructure coordination including UPS, switchgear, and power monitoring systems when required
- Develop technical solutions for complex field issues and system integration challenges
General Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for mechanical and controls-related project activities
- Coordinate project schedules, installation sequencing, and issue resolution activities across multiple stakeholders
- Facilitate communication among owners, contractors, commissioning teams, vendors, and internal business units
- Maintain project status reporting and provide updates during MEP and project review meetings
- Manage project documentation, action items, and technical deliverables
- Support quality assurance and quality control verification processes
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement corrective actions to maintain schedule objectives
- Ensure compliance with safety requirements, including LOTO procedures and PPE standards
- Support multiple project sites and travel to assist with advanced troubleshooting and commissioning activities as needed
- Represent the organization professionally with customers, partners, and project stakeholders
- Promote continuous improvement and operational excellence throughout project execution
Required Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, chilled water plants, and mechanical infrastructure
- Experience with controls integration, programming, and troubleshooting
- Ability to diagnose communication, networking, hardware, and software issues within building automation systems
- Strong understanding of chillers, chilled water piping systems, CRAHs, AHUs, and VAV systems
- Experience integrating mechanical systems with owner control and monitoring platforms
- Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS), EPMS, SCADA, and related technologies
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, one-line diagrams, specifications, and construction documents
- Strong project coordination and stakeholder management skills
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, Outlook, and related project management tools
Desired Skills:
- Data center construction, commissioning, or operational experience
- Experience retrofitting and modernizing industrial controls systems
- Familiarity with UPS systems, switchgear, and critical power infrastructure
- Experience supporting energy monitoring and power management platforms
- Background working as a Field Service Representative (FSR) or commissioning specialist
- Professional Engineering (PE), CHD, or CEM credentials
- Experience managing large, complex, mission-critical projects
- Knowledge of commissioning processes, integrated systems testing, and facility turnover requirements
Experience & Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred
- Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education
- 10+ years of experience supporting advanced mechanical and HVAC systems required
- Experience with chillers, chilled water systems, VAV systems, CRAHs, AHUs, and associated controls required
- Experience integrating HVAC systems with owner control platforms and monitoring systems required
- Minimum of 2 years managing large-scale, high-profile projects required
- Experience in data center construction, commissioning, installation, or operations preferred
- Experience with EPMS, SCADA, and building automation systems preferred
- Configuration and troubleshooting experience with communication cards and control networks preferred
- Ability to travel throughout North America as project requirements dictate
- Strong customer-facing and technical leadership experience required
Certifications & Licenses:
- OSHA 30 Certification preferred
- NFPA 70E Certification preferred
- EPA 608 Certification preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred
- Certified HVAC Designer (CHD) preferred
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred
- Additional data center, commissioning, controls, or mission-critical certifications are a plus
- Experience supporting commissioning and startup of mission-critical infrastructure strongly preferred
