Job Summary
The Staff Engineering Technician supports engineering and design teams by performing advanced technical functions under general supervision using electronic applications, standards, and document control processes. This role is responsible for developing and modifying civil deliverables such as site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation. The position supports Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects within the Black & Veatch Energy and Process Industries group
Job Description
- Perform advanced functions requiring technical knowledge and use of electronic applications, standards, and document control processes/procedures to create or modify deliverables
- Develop site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation
- Support engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables under general direction
- Apply foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions
- Utilize digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
- Provide technical guidance and direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs
- Review project requirements to determine correct format and contents of required deliverables
- Apply Quality Program to deliverables and support continuous improvement and change management efforts
- Review design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and record results
- Review deliverables prepared by others
- Define work assignments and maintain schedules
- Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development
- Program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities within a specialized area of expertise
- Proactively seek and share knowledge of latest technologies and processes
- Support field activities as needed
- Focus on internal client needs while understanding external client interests and drivers
Skills Required
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience
- Advanced Civil 3D experience with use of proposed grading surfaces and plan development
- Knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and policies and procedures
- Ability to apply basic engineering principles and established design practices
- Ability to handle difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise
- Ability to provide technical guidance to other professionals
- Ability to review deliverables for accuracy, consistency, and compliance
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
Education/Training/Certifications
- Diploma or Certificate required
- Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred
